Help move out of bed after a stroke, but when?

“Help people with acute stroke to sit out of bed, stand, or walk as soon as their doctor says ok”.

The above is the latest recommendation from the UK NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

But, there is a catch. As we can read, the above guideline also recommends not offering “high-intensity” moves.

What are “high-intensity” moves?

It refers to very early moves. It includes moves within 24 hours of the stroke. The moves refer to at least 3 additional out-of-bed sessions compared to usual care. These out-of-bed activities are sitting, standing, walking etc.

The Australian Clinical Guidelines give more concrete recommendations.

Here it is;

However, the Australian Clinical Guidelines2 strongly recommends not starting intense out-of-bed activities within 24 hours of the incident; instead, start such activities between 24 – 48 hours of the event.
